Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite

Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting veterans from renowned studios like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its first original title: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for a Spring 2025 Early Access release on Steam and the Epic Games Store, promises a unique blend of tactical combat, challenging moral choices, and a striking painterly art style.

Wartorn plunges players into a fractured fantasy world consumed by chaos. Players control two elven sisters on a perilous quest to reunite with their family, facing intense battles and morally ambiguous dilemmas that shape their journey. The game's dynamic, physics-driven environmental destruction ensures no two playthroughs are alike, adding to the unpredictable nature of the roguelite experience.

Dynamic Combat and Moral Choices

Beyond the intense battles, Wartorn introduces a compelling narrative layer. Players will confront difficult choices between battles, such as deciding which character to prioritize for survival or sustenance. These decisions directly impact the narrative and further enhance the replayability.

Combat itself is equally dynamic, featuring a flexible magic system that allows for creative spell combinations using elements like fire, water, and lightning. Strategic spellcasting is key, leveraging environmental interactions for maximum effect – shocking enemies in water or igniting tar-covered foes, for example.

Progression and Accessibility

As expected from a roguelite, Wartorn incorporates a progression system where upgrades carry over between runs, making each attempt slightly easier. The game’s painterly aesthetic enhances the dramatic atmosphere of its chaotic world. To ensure broad accessibility, Wartorn will include a feature that allows players to slow down the action significantly, providing precise control even amidst the frenetic combat.

Key Features:

  • Real-time strategy roguelite: Combines strategic gameplay with roguelite elements for high replayability.
  • Destructible environments: Physics-based destruction adds unpredictable elements to each playthrough.
  • Tough moral choices: Decisions impact the narrative and gameplay experience.
  • Painterly aesthetic: Visually stunning art style creates a dramatic atmosphere.
  • Dynamic magic system: Mix and match elemental spells for creative combat strategies.
  • Accessible gameplay: Features a slow-motion mode for precise control.

Wartorn is set to launch in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
