Civ 7 Steam Version Suffers Deluge of Negative Reviews as Advanced Access Releases

Civilization 7 is currently facing a wave of criticism on Steam, as evidenced by its "mostly negative" rating. This backlash comes from players who have accessed the game's advanced access version. Let's delve into the specifics of the criticism surrounding this highly anticipated title.

The eagerly awaited Civilization 7 (often called Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access version five days before its official release date of February 11. However, many Steam players who paid for early access are expressing dissatisfaction with the current build, resulting in a "mostly negative" review score on the platform.

The excitement for Civ 7 was palpable, being the first new entry in the series since Civ 6 in 2016. Yet, the initial release has been met with significant criticism, reflected in the game's rating on Steam, with a common thread of complaints among users.

A major grievance centers around the game's User Interface (UI). Many players have described the UI as "janky" and "ugly" when compared to its predecessor, Civ 6. One reviewer likened the current UI to a "free mobile knockoff of Civ." Some have even suggested that Firaxis Games, the developers, may have prioritized console development, leaving the PC version's UI feeling "barren" and lacking in options.

Additionally, players have voiced concerns about the game's maps. Issues include difficulties in selecting maps, limited map type options, restricted size options, and a lack of customization. One player noted that scrolling through map types fails to provide adequate information about them.

Civ 7 offers only three map sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, a reduction from the five sizes available in Civ 6, which catered to a variety of gameplay styles.

The resource mechanics in Civ 7 have also drawn criticism. In contrast to Civ 6, where resources were randomly placed on the map for players to control, Civ 7 assigns resources to cities or the empire through strategic management. Players feel that the previous system provided more replay value than the new one.

In response to the feedback, Firaxis Games stated, "We are aware of and looking into feedback on the game's UI. We're continuing to make improvements to Civilization VII, and appreciate you taking the time to drop your feedback. For the maps, Civilization VII is going to keep growing and changing with future updates and expansions, so please let us know what you'd like to see!"
