inZOI's "WooHoo" Feature: A Closer Look at the Game's Approach to Explicit Content
inZOI, soon to be released in early access, has generated considerable fan interest regarding its handling of mature themes. The developers recently addressed these concerns in a "Ask Me (almost) Anything" session on their official Discord server. Here's a summary of their responses, translated by inZOI Assistant Director Joel Lee:
A Subtle Approach to Intimacy:
The developers confirmed the existence of a feature allowing character interaction leading to procreation, similar to the "WooHoo" mechanic in The Sims. However, they emphasized that the visual representation is highly suggestive rather than explicit. The actual act is left to the player's imagination, avoiding direct depictions. Lee stated, "What you're seeing is not what you're seeing; you have to assume that's what's happening." This approach aims to balance mature themes with broad accessibility.
Technical Challenges with Blurring:
The decision to keep characters clothed, even during showering, stems from technical limitations. The developers found that standard blurring techniques, effective in cartoonish games like The Sims, appeared overly suggestive in inZOI's more realistic art style. Furthermore, a bug during testing revealed unblurred reflections, highlighting the challenges of implementing such effects seamlessly.
Targeting a Wide Audience:
Despite the mature themes, inZOI has received a T for Teen rating from the ESRB, mirroring The Sims 4. This reflects the developers' commitment to creating a game accessible to a wide age range. Lee clarified, "We wanted to provide a game that was widely available to as many age groups as possible."
