Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of classic and modern RPG elements. Following a successful demo, the game's director has shed light on its key inspirations.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Fusion of Turn-Based and Real-Time Gameplay
Inspired by the Belle Epoque and classic JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 innovatively merges turn-based combat with real-time elements. Heavily influenced by Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to create a distinctive identity within the genre.
Following a strong showing at SGF, creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the game's origins with Eurogamer. His passion for turn-based combat, coupled with a desire for high-fidelity visuals, drove the project. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveller as stylistic inspirations, stating, "If nobody wants to do it, I will do it."
Expedition 33's narrative centers on preventing the Paintress from unleashing death once more, unfolding across unique environments like the gravity-defying Flying Waters. Combat demands both strategic turn-based planning and quick reflexes to defend against enemy attacks, drawing comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.
Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception, stating it exceeded his expectations.
While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series (specifically FF VIII, IX, and X) played a more significant role in shaping the game's core mechanics. He emphasized that the game isn't a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history. The team also drew inspiration from Persona's dynamic camera movements and menus, aiming for a similar sense of dynamism but with their own unique art style.
Exploration in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers freedom of movement and character switching, with traversal abilities used to solve environmental puzzles. Broche playfully encouraged players to experiment with character builds, hoping they'll "break the game" with unconventional combinations.
The development team expressed their ambition to create a game as impactful as the classics that inspired them, acknowledging the risk involved.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
