In the latest installment of the Dynasty Warriors series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the action gameplay has been intensified with tougher and more formidable enemies. This change stems from a direct instruction by the game's producer, Tomohiko Sho, who told his team, "This time, go and kill the player." In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho explained that the goal was to enhance the "sense of realism" on the battlefield, where not only the player but also the enemy soldiers and generals are fighting for their lives.

Despite the increased difficulty, Sho ensured that the game remains accessible and rewarding. He emphasized that even players who are not typically skilled at action games can learn and progress comfortably, feeling a sense of achievement. Balancing the traditional "musou" genre's exhilaration of defeating countless enemies with the realism of a war-torn battlefield was a significant challenge, but one that Sho and his team embraced.

Returning To Its "Origins"

Dynasty Warriors: Origins marks a departure from the series' traditional numbering, opting instead for a non-numbered title. If it had followed the conventional naming, it would have been called Dynasty Warriors 10. This change underscores the game's focus on the first half of the epic Chinese novel, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, specifically up to the Battle of Chibi, also known as the Battle of the Red Cliffs. In an interview with TheGamer at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Sho highlighted the intent to provide a thorough and intense narrative experience centered around this pivotal moment in the story.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the first main installment in the franchise in seven years, drawing from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which blends historical and fictional elements from Han Dynasty-era China. The game introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, navigating the vast and tumultuous landscape of China as various factions vie for dominance.

Released on January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. For a detailed review, check out Game8’s coverage of the game.
