Digimon Con set to unveil new project, could a digital TCG be on the way?

For fans of the beloved Digimon franchise, the upcoming Digimon Con 2025 is poised to be a landmark event. Attendees can anticipate a slew of exciting announcements and updates on future projects within the franchise. However, one particular teaser has sparked significant interest: an image featuring a puzzled Renamon alongside a mobile phone.

The most immediate interpretation of this teaser suggests the possibility of a digital version of the Digimon Trading Card Game (TCG). While Bandai Namco already offers a tutorial app for iOS and Android, the recent launch of Pokémon TCG Pocket sets a precedent for what could be in store. Could Digimon be gearing up to launch a competitor in the mobile TCG space?

It's wise, however, to temper our excitement slightly. The teaser might simply indicate that mobile devices will be used to stream the upcoming livestream later this week, rather than hinting at a new mobile platform for the TCG.

Digimon Con 2025 Teaser ImageGoing DigitalIt's undeniable that Digimon, while cherished, often finds itself in the shadow of the more globally dominant Pokémon. The rivalry between the two was palpable in the late '90s and 2000s, yet Pokémon has since claimed the crown in global pop culture. A digital TCG for Digimon wouldn't guarantee instant success as it might for Pokémon, but it's not without potential. The existing popularity of the Digimon TCG means that expanding its reach to a broader audience could be a significant achievement. We'll have to tune into the Digimon Con livestream later this month to find out more.
