Gordang Sambilan, a traditional art form of the Mandailing Batak people, translates literally to "nine drums." This ensemble consists of nine drums of varying lengths and diameters, each producing a distinct tone. Typically played by six musicians, the drums are assigned specific roles: drums 1 and 2 (taba-taba), drum 3 (tepe-tepe), drums 4 and 5 (kudong-kudong and kudong-kudong nabalik), drum 6 (pasilion), and drums 7, 8, and 9 (jangat). Historically performed only during sacred ceremonies, Gordang Sambilan is now frequently featured at weddings, welcoming ceremonies, and celebrations. As a testament to its cultural significance, this Indonesian heritage has even been performed at the Presidential Palace. [2]
