This leak presents a significant challenge for Ubisoft, which has faced numerous setbacks with Assassin's Creed Shadows since its announcement. Despite these hurdles, Ubisoft recently reported strong preorder numbers, comparable to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. CEO Yves Guillemot expressed confidence, highlighting positive early feedback praising the narrative, immersive experience, and the dual protagonist gameplay. He commended the development team's dedication to delivering the franchise's most ambitious title yet.

The game's release has been delayed multiple times, originally slated for November, then February 14th, and finally settling on March 20th. The success of Assassin's Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, given its struggles following recent underperforming releases and investor concerns. The Japan-set title, the first full Assassin's Creed game since 2020, carries significant weight for the company's recovery.

The promotional campaign has been marred by controversy, including apologies for historical inaccuracies in the depiction of Japan and unauthorized use of a historical recreation group's flag. Further, a collectible figure from PureArts was removed from sale due to its “insensitive” design.
