Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next project, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await the release of Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's full attention is now on crafting a new game.
Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, recently took to Twitter to express his nostalgia and pride in the journey so far with Baldur's Gate 3, hinting at more to come. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke tweeted, sparking curiosity about what lies ahead for the studio.
Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that their focus is entirely on their upcoming title, and they are moving forward with a media blackout. This new game is not a sequel to Baldur's Gate 3, nor is it another Dungeons & Dragons game. Instead, it represents a fresh start for Larian, who tried and failed to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.
Back in November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next project, saying, "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries." His excitement about the project was palpable, even as he kept details under wraps.
Prior to Baldur's Gate 3's launch in July 2023, Vincke also mentioned to IGN that a sequel to Larian's Divinity: Original Sin series is in the works, though it's not the immediate next project. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," he said, emphasizing the need for a creative break after Baldur's Gate 3.
With Divinity not being the next focus, speculation abounds about what Larian might be working on. Could it be a foray into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or even a completely new genre? Given Larian's history with fantasy RPGs, a shift in direction would be a bold move.
Whatever the case, it seems fans will have to wait patiently—potentially for years—before Larian unveils their next big project.
