The highly anticipated third installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, FF7 Remake Part 3, is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 (PS5). This confirmation comes directly from the game's producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi in an interview with 4Gamer on January 23, 2025. Fans can rest assured that the final chapter of this epic saga will be available on PS5, continuing the tradition set by its predecessors, FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth.
FF7’s Remake Part 3 Will Still Release on PS5
During the interview, Kitase addressed concerns about the trilogy's release platforms, stating, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)." As the PS5 is currently midway through its lifecycle, there is speculation about the potential release of the trilogy on the next PlayStation console, though details about the PS6 remain scarce.
FF7 Remake Part 3 Release Date
Square Enix has kept details about the release date of FF7 Remake Part 3 under wraps. However, development reportedly began concurrently with Part 2, with full production accelerating after FF7 Rebirth's release in February 2024. Utilizing assets from the previous games and a completed story draft, the release might be sooner than expected.
In an interview with Famitsu on January 23, 2025, Hamaguchi provided an update on the development progress, stating, "It’s going very well. We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024. We can already see the direction of where we will land, so we have been working towards that goal since the beginning of this year. We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."
Kitase also expressed satisfaction with the story's conclusion, saying, "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."
FF7 Remake Part 3 Will Allegedly Be a Timed Exclusive Game
A report from the Washington Post on March 6, 2024, revealed that PlayStation secured timed exclusivity for the FF7 Remake trilogy. This means that FF7 Remake Part 3 will be available exclusively on PS5 for a certain period before being released on other platforms. Following the pattern of its predecessors, FF7 Remake was a PS4 exclusive for one year before coming to PC, while FF7 Remake Intergrade was exclusive to PS5 for six months before its PC release. FF7 Rebirth followed a similar trajectory, with its PC version released on January 23, 2025, after its initial PS5 exclusivity in February 2024.
Square Enix Multi-Platform Strategy Amidst Declining Sales
Despite the success of the FF7 Remake series, Square Enix reported declining sales for its HD titles in its financial results on March 31, 2024. Titles such as FF16, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and FF7 Rebirth contributed to this trend. The company cited increased development costs, advertising expenses, and higher content valuation losses as reasons for the operating losses.
In response, Square Enix plans to adopt a more aggressive multi-platform strategy, targeting Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs. This approach aims to boost sales and reach a broader audience. As a result, more of Square Enix's HD titles may become available on Xbox, Switch 2, and other platforms, despite the company's longstanding partnership with PlayStation.
