Sony's PC gaming policy sparks controversy among gamers. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, coupled with regional service limitations, restricts access to new releases.
Sony recently announced policy adjustments. While PSN tethering for PC remains, certain relaxations are in place. These games will not require mandatory PSN tethering:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players choosing to tether to PSN will receive these in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Black Bear armor set, early access to the "Lost Things" chest, and resource packs.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November investor discussions, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged player resistance to PSN connection requirements, emphasizing their importance for security and order. While he linked the restrictions to service-based games, he failed to clarify how mandatory PSN accounts enhance security in single-player experiences like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
The gaming landscape has changed.
