1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo-meets-Portal" shooter Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. Splitgate 2 promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena-style gameplay that captivated millions.

Splitgate 2: A New Era in Portal Combat

A cinematic trailer released on July 18th showcased Splitgate 2's ambitious vision. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game with lasting appeal, exceeding a decade of playability. This involved developing tools for a deeply rewarding gameplay loop, moving beyond the original's classic arena shooter inspiration. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, emphasized a reimagining of the portal mechanic, aiming for a balanced experience that rewards skillful portal usage without mandating it for victory.

Built on Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 introduces a faction system. While familiar elements persist, the game's visuals and feel promise a significant departure from its predecessor. The sequel is slated for release on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.

Faction Warfare and Enhanced Gameplay

The trailer highlighted the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (emphasizing speed), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions offer diverse playstyles, but Splitgate 2 will not adopt a hero shooter model like Overwatch or Valorant.

While full gameplay details remain under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer showcased new maps, weapons (including dual-wielding), and a trail effect for portals. The developers confirmed the trailer accurately represents the game's visual style and core mechanics.

No Single-Player, But a Richer Narrative

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will offer comics, character cards, and a faction selection quiz, providing a deeper dive into the game's lore.

The sequel promises a significant evolution of the original, delivering a refined and expanded experience within the beloved Splitgate universe.
