The recent trading feature update for Pokémon TCG Pocket has sparked significant player backlash, prompting developer DeNA to announce upcoming improvements. The core complaint centers around the high cost and restrictive nature of obtaining trade tokens, the in-game currency required for trading.
Launched on January 29th, 2025, the trading feature allows exchanges of 1-4 Diamond and 1-Star rarity cards from Genetic Apex and Mythical Island booster packs. While helpful for Pokédex completion, the limitations—restricted card selection, a new currency, and steep trading costs—have left many players frustrated. DeNA acknowledged this negative feedback on February 1st, 2025, via a Twitter (X) post, committing to investigate and improve the system. They plan to introduce alternative methods for acquiring trade tokens, potentially through events.
The current system requires sacrificing higher-rarity cards for tokens. For example, trading a 4-Diamond card needs 500 tokens, while selling a 1-Star card only yields 100, and 2-Star/3-Star cards yield 300. This forces players to expend rare cards to participate in trades.
DeNA explained that the stringent rules aim to prevent botting and multi-account abuse, prioritizing a fair and enjoyable collecting experience for all players. While details of future changes remain undisclosed, it’s likely the developers are addressing potential exploits before implementing updates.
Another point of contention involves the recent release of Space-Time Smackdown booster packs on January 29th, 2025. Some players reported the disappearance of Genetic Apex packs from the home screen, only to find them accessible via a less-prominent "Select other booster packs" option in the bottom-right corner. This oversight, possibly due to poor UI design, led to concerns that the initial booster pack had been removed. While not intentionally hidden, the small and easily missed text caused unnecessary anxiety. Players suggested improving the home screen display to show all three booster pack sets to prevent future confusion.
While DeNA hasn't directly addressed this UI issue, this clarification should reassure players that Genetic Apex packs remain available.
