Netflix Games is losing two Grand Theft Auto titles next month. Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City will be removed from the Netflix Games catalog on December 13th.
Why are these games leaving?
The licenses for GTA III and Vice City, which Netflix obtained from Rockstar Games, are expiring. This is standard practice for Netflix, mirroring how they handle movie and TV show licenses. A "Leaving Soon" notification will appear in-game before their removal. The initial agreement between Netflix and Rockstar Games was for a 12-month period, and that period is ending.
What happens next?
Netflix subscribers who haven't finished these games can purchase them individually or as part of a trilogy bundle on the Google Play Store. Each game costs $4.99, or the entire trilogy is available for $11.99.
While this is a departure from last year's removal of Samurai Shodown V and WrestleQuest (which were removed without warning), Netflix is providing advance notice this time. This is noteworthy, especially considering the significant subscriber growth Netflix experienced in 2023, partially attributed to the GTA trilogy.
There are rumors of a future collaboration between Rockstar and Netflix, potentially bringing remastered versions of Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars to the platform. Only time will tell if these rumors hold true.
