Obsidian's Avowed, now available in early access, has players exploring the Living Lands and encountering magical items, perilous situations, and surprisingly, romantic possibilities. Contrary to previous statements by Obsidian, at least one companion appears to develop romantic feelings for the player character.
Prior to release, Avowed's game director, Carrie Patel, stated in an IGN interview that the game wouldn't include a dedicated romance system, prioritizing "thoughtful relationships" with companions instead. She explained: "We are building thoughtful relationships with our companion characters...if you're going to do it [romance], you really, really have to commit and make sure you're giving all to fulfilling that in a way that feels both true to the character, but also creates an engaging player experience. So not something we're doing for Avowed, but I wouldn't say never."
However, early access players and reviewers are reporting romantic interactions, specifically with the companion Kai. Significant spoilers regarding Kai's interactions follow. Proceed with caution.
