Suikoden STAR LEAP marks the franchise's first venture into mobile RPGs, aiming to bring the beloved series to a wider audience. In an insightful interview with Famitsu on March 4, 2025, the game's developers shared their vision and approach to crafting this new installment.
Star Leap Producer Shinya Fujimatsu highlighted the decision to target mobile platforms, stating, "We wanted as many people as possible to experience Suikoden, so we chose mobile as the easiest hardware to play. And if you are going to touch it, I want it to have the soul of Suikoden properly, so I am taking on the challenge of creating a numbered work." The team is committed to delivering a game that combines the high-quality visuals, sounds, and storytelling of console games with the convenience of mobile play.
Expressing Suikoden in STAR LEAP
Fujimatsu emphasized the unique essence of Suikoden, which revolves around war themes intertwined with narratives of friendship. He remarked, "In Suikoden STAR LEAP, I think it is important for Suikoden Genso to be able to depict the story of the new 108 stars." Director Yoshiki Meng Shan further elaborated on the series' distinctive features, noting the blend of an upbeat atmosphere with serious scenes and the engaging tempo of battles where multiple characters collaborate, a hallmark of Suikoden.
Both a Sequel and a Prequel to the Series
Suikoden STAR LEAP will serve as both a sequel and a prequel to the existing series, navigating through different eras. The game will commence two years before the events of Suikoden 1 and will span across other timelines, effectively weaving into the official history of the series. This approach makes Star Leap a fresh addition to the Suikoden saga.
