Sonic 3 Overtakes All but Super Mario Bros. in North American Box Office

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another milestone, securing its place as the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time in North America. With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has now earned over $204 million domestically after its fourth weekend, pulling in $11 million across 3,582 locations. Globally, the movie's total stands at an impressive $384.8 million.

The third installment has surpassed its predecessor, Sonic 2, in domestic earnings but remains a distant second to the top-grossing video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Mario film raked in a staggering $574,934,330 in North America and a global total of $1,359,146,628, setting a benchmark that might be hard to beat. However, upcoming projects like the Minecraft movie and a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie could potentially challenge these records.

Despite not reaching the top spot, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a resounding success for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4. For those interested in other successful video game adaptations, 2022's Uncharted comes in fourth with domestic earnings of $148,648,820, followed by the original Sonic movie, which grossed $146,066,470.
