The latest Pokémon TCG set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch on May 30, 2025. As pre-orders began, the launch window has been predictably chaotic, with scalpers and store issues already affecting the new set's availability. If you're a seasoned collector, this might not come as a surprise.
Several elements make Destined Rivals a highly sought-after set. Firstly, it reintroduces Trainer's Pokémon cards, a nostalgic return for fans who fondly remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards are a unique way to connect beloved Trainers with their Pokémon in exciting ways. Additionally, the set focuses on Team Rocket, the iconic villainous team from the first generation of Pokémon games, which adds to its appeal. Much like the earlier Prismatic Evolutions set with its Eevee-lutions, Destined Rivals is poised to be a fan favorite.

When pre-orders opened, frustration was inevitable. Many fans trying to purchase an Elite Trainer Box (ETB) from the Pokémon Center website faced significant challenges. The ETB, a popular choice for those eager to dive into a new set with its themed packs and accessories, was quickly snapped up, leaving many on the outside looking in.
Unsurprisingly, scalpers moved swiftly, listing pre-ordered ETBs on online auctions like eBay for several hundred dollars, far above the usual $54.99 price tag. Joe Merrick of Serebii shared his own frustrating experience, highlighting the financialization of Pokémon TCG content:
"I truly hate this," Merrick wrote. "The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."
Sadly, this issue is not unique to Destined Rivals. Sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced rapid sell-outs and shortages. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged the high demand and, according to a FAQ on PokéBeach, more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year.
Adding to the woes, some fans have reported their ETB orders being cancelled. The overwhelming demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are evident, yet these challenges are souring the hobby for many who simply want to enjoy opening packs and playing the game.
While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a digital alternative to the physical scarcity issues, the frustration is understandable for those who cherish the traditional card game experience. A visit to your local store's card aisle will likely reveal the difficulty in finding packs to buy, making the excitement of new releases bittersweet. Hopefully, solutions to these ongoing issues will emerge soon.
