Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected the title with a completely revamped port.
For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning physics-based puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey themselves. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit upon its 2010 release, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it until now.
Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update following Apportable's closure. The game's subsequent removal from Google Play, due to incompatibility with modern 64-bit Android systems, paved the way for this much-needed rebuild. Now, Osmos is available on modern Android devices for the first time in years.
A Cellular Masterpiece
If our enthusiastic reviews of Osmos' iOS and Android versions (and its numerous awards) haven't convinced you, the gameplay trailer above should seal the deal. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; its captivating gameplay would undoubtedly thrive on platforms like TikTok.
Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a time when mobile gaming seemed limitless, a golden age many hope to see return.
