Nintendo's Switch 2 Joy-Cons Rumored to Feature Fresh Innovation

Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice, Suggests New Evidence

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption remains uncertain, this potential aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source, responsible for numerous Switch 2 leaks since mid-2024, yielded another potential revelation in early January 2025.

LiC uncovered mentions of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape in shipping manifests, described as designed to adhere to "game console handles." Crucially, these tapes are labeled "mouse soles," a term typically associated with the bottom of computer mice. This detail strongly implies the Switch 2's Joy-Cons might incorporate mouse-like capabilities.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, hinting at unreleased, proprietary components. The reported 90 x 90mm size suggests the tape could cover the entire back of each Joy-Con, potentially requiring trimming during assembly. The accuracy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handhelds

While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a similar function with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic slider for improved surface glide.

The Legion GO also utilizes magnetic rails for controller attachment, another rumored feature of the Switch 2. These similarities might offer a glimpse into Nintendo's next hybrid console design.
