Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

Authore: ElijahUpdate:Apr 06,2025

The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a console that's significantly larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the tablet section impressively grows and transforms into the upgraded Switch 2. This substantial increase in size indicates that Nintendo is steering further away from the compact handhelds of its past, embracing the trend of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

But just how much bigger is the Switch 2? While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions yet, we can estimate its size using insights from the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to handle a Switch 2 mock-up crafted by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't confirm its accuracy at the time, Nintendo’s new trailer showcases a console that closely matches this design down to the smallest details. This suggests that the measurements we took at CES are likely very close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.

So, let's dive into the estimated sizes of the Switch 2:

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement is the diagonal of the display section of the tablet, excluding the bezels, which is the standard for screen sizes. This matches a rumor from early 2024. Based on this, **we expect the display to be around 177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be almost 30% larger diagonally than the original console’s 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This is a significant upgrade. While larger screens aren't always better, the Switch 2 could offer a visually stunning gaming experience, provided the display technology meets high standards.

How does the Switch 2’s display compare to other handhelds? The Switch Lite has a smaller 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen, making the new console’s display 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, means the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

When the original Switch launched in 2017, it faced little competition, but now it contends with portable PCs like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED, with their 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays respectively, have larger screens than any Switch console to date. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be larger than the biggest Steam Deck screen – it's 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than Valve’s OLED display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen naturally means a larger console. You'll need spacious pockets or a bag to carry the Switch 2, as it won't fit comfortably in standard jeans pockets like the original Switch.

Using a tape measure on Genki’s mock-up at CES, we found it to be just over 10.5 inches from edge to edge, including the Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches from top to bottom. By scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up and adjusting them to actual size, we believe the Genki mock-up closely resembles Nintendo’s final design. Therefore, the **Switch 2 seems to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.

For comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. If our figures are correct, the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**.

These measurements would also make the Switch 2 around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and roughly 12% smaller than the much larger Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

We couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, but it appears the Switch 2 will have a similar half-inch thickness to the original Switch. So, while the overall footprint of the console is significantly larger, the thickness remains comparable to its predecessor.

The new Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers and main screen unit.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer suggests that the Joy-Con controllers will maintain a similar width to those on the original Switch but will be slightly taller. Using our scaled image methodology, we estimate that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons are likely to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system), and 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If these figures are accurate, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

With the Joy-Con sizes estimated, we can calculate the size of the screen unit. We estimate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch** version.

This unit size is sufficient to accommodate the 8-inch 16:9 screen, likely featuring an approximate 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom of the display. These bezels are slimmer along the sides than the original Switch, and similar to the existing console’s top and bottom bezels.

Please note that these measurements are estimates based on our best efforts, and they may differ from the official dimensions when Nintendo releases them. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident that we're close to the mark. We expect to see a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
