Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is reviving hopes for a Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Initially cancelled earlier this month, the project now has a potential resurgence thanks to Liu's involvement.
According to Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, expressing his efforts to bring the 2012 video game to the big screen. He stated, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
The adaptation was first announced in 2017, with Donnie Yen slated to star. However, the project vanished a year later, with Yen recently confirming its cancellation. Yen explained his extensive involvement, including personal investment in securing drafts and rights, and expressed his disappointment over the project's demise, citing the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
The cancellation seemingly marked the end for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. Yet, Liu's response to a social media post reignited interest. The success of his endeavor to secure the rights or otherwise launch the film remains uncertain.
Originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Sleeping Dogs follows Detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a Hong Kong Triad gang. The game was critically acclaimed, receiving an 8/10 rating from IGN, yet never received a sequel.
