Understanding Factions in Dynasty Warriors: Origins
The game unfolds in chapters. The first two chapters feature the Wanderer, the player character, as a neutral party. They assist Sun Jian, Cao Cao, and Liu Bei in various battles, participating in key events like the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Hulao Gate.
Chapter 3 introduces the faction selection. Players must choose one of the three factions (Sun Jian, Liu Bei, or Cao Cao) by the chapter's end. The game provides additional battles to familiarize players with each faction before the decision.
Choosing Your Faction
To ally with a faction, complete a specific number of missions: three for Sun Jian, two for Liu Bei, and one for Cao Cao. Upon completion, a mission requiring faction selection unlocks. Only factions with completed missions are selectable. For instance, completing Cao Cao's missions first limits the subsequent choice to Cao Cao or Liu Bei (Liu Bei being unavailable until his missions are finished). Players can complete all missions before committing to a faction.
The chosen faction becomes permanent; side quests from the other factions are inaccessible, preventing further bond increases with their officers. This can impact gameplay difficulty. For example, allying with Liu Bei, who initially has fewer commanding officers, limits early skill point acquisition opportunities.
Each faction offers unique missions. To experience all content, create a save file before choosing a faction and reload it to explore other alliances.
