Destiny 2 Update Causes Players' Usernames to be Wiped OutA recent Destiny 2 update inadvertently wiped out a significant number of players' usernames due to a malfunction in the game's moderation system. This article details the developer's response and outlines steps players can take if affected.

Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Issues Name Change Tokens

Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names (account usernames) had been unexpectedly altered. Numerous players reported their names replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue, starting around August 14th, stemmed from a glitch in Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie's official Twitter (X) account acknowledged the problem: "We're investigating a widespread issue causing our name moderation tool to change many account names. Further details, including a free name change token for all players, will be available tomorrow."

Bungie's name moderation usually targets usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected countless players with perfectly acceptable usernames, some dating back to 2015.

Bungie swiftly launched an investigation and subsequently announced the cause had been identified and fixed to prevent further incidents. A follow-up tweet stated: "The issue causing mass Bungie name changes has been resolved with a server-side fix. We'll distribute name change tokens to all players soon. More details to come."

Players are advised to remain patient and await further updates from Bungie regarding the distribution of name change tokens. Those affected can expect a future announcement detailing the process.
