Civilization 7 VR: Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making its bold leap into the virtual and mixed reality realms, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, marking a significant milestone for the franchise.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk shared his enthusiasm on 2K's official blog, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, also voiced his excitement about Civ 7 VR's arrival on Meta platforms, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Immersive Board-Game Experience and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table, allowing them to strategize and interact with the game world as if it were a living tabletop game. Players can switch between virtual reality and mixed reality modes, experiencing the game either within a detailed virtual museum or by integrating the Command Table into their real-world environment.
The game supports various play modes including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S. Players can engage with AI-controlled opponents or challenge friends in strategic battles, seeing each other as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table. An online multiplayer experience requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Responds to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively responded to feedback gathered during Civ 7's early access phase. Following the Advanced Access launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Edition buyers, the game garnered mixed reviews on Steam, primarily due to issues with the User Interface.
In response, Firaxis Games committed to enhancing the UI, aiming to make interactions more intuitive, improve map readability, and address formatting and polish issues. They also plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a broader selection of map types, and more.
A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on further UI adjustments, AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crises enhancements, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is poised for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific date announced yet. Meanwhile, the non-VR version of Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its global release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
