Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has ushered in its long-awaited final patch, marking the culmination of the RPG's remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios rolled out BG3’s Patch 8, signaling the end of major updates for the game. The release has sparked a significant increase in player engagement, propelling BG3's concurrent player count from around 60,000 to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, celebrated the surge in player numbers on Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the game's thriving mod support. This success allows Larian to shift focus toward their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios is stepping away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative avenues.
Consequently, D&D's parent companies, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will take the reins of the Baldur’s Gate franchise. They are currently engaging with potential partners to determine who might develop a future Baldur’s Gate 4.
