Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4.
A Playable BG4 Prototype Existed
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a playable prototype of a BG3 sequel existed. While acknowledging it was a game fans "would have liked," the team ultimately decided against further development. The reasons cited were the extensive time commitment required for a project of that scale (estimated at another three years) and a desire to pursue original ideas. The team felt creatively stifled by continuing to work within the same established framework.
High Morale Following the Decision
Vincke emphasized the positive impact of this decision on team morale. The shift towards original projects has fostered renewed enthusiasm and creativity. The studio is now focused on two undisclosed projects, described as their most ambitious yet.
A Potential Return to the Divinity Series?
With Larian moving on from the Baldur's Gate franchise (at least for now), speculation points towards a new entry in their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been previously hinted at, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
The Future of Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3 players can still look forward to a major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new endings. After that, the team will take a well-deserved break before embarking on their new adventures.
