This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.

Tencent's Increased Investment in Kuro Games

Majority Shareholder Status Achieved

Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Taken Over by Tencent as Majority ShareholderTencent's share in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, solidifying its position as the majority shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the subsequent departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.

Maintaining Operational Independence

Despite Tencent's controlling stake, reports from a Kuro Games source to the Chinese news outlet Youxi Putao suggest that Kuro Games will retain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful game studios, such as Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this shift will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.

Kuro Games' Successful Portfolio

Kuro Games has established itself as a prominent Chinese game developer with the successful launch of Punishing: Gray Raven and the critically acclaimed Wuthering Waves. Each title has reportedly generated over $120 million USD in revenue and continues to receive regular updates. The recognition of Wuthering Waves extends to a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
