A Retro Retrospective: Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Gems on the Nintendo Switch
This article takes a slightly different approach to reviewing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles with abundant Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports, the Switch's selection is surprisingly smaller. Therefore, this list combines titles from both consoles, showcasing those available on the Switch eShop, excluding the Nintendo Switch Online GBA offerings. Ten fantastic games are highlighted: four GBA and six Nintendo DS titles.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile comparison, it provides a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title marks the beginning of an excellent series, though it initially lacked polish. Subsequent entries refined the gameplay, but Mega Man Zero remains the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry is justified due to the significant differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments saw diminishing returns, the original offers substantial fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection offers multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is incredibly engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title established Shantae's popularity, leading to appearances on subsequent consoles. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney is a celebrated adventure game series. It seamlessly blends investigations and courtroom drama, punctuated by humorous moments and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also deserve recognition.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating experience, it deserves more recognition than it initially received.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, The World Ends With You is best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a satisfactory alternative for those without access to a DS. Its unique gameplay and compelling narrative make it a must-play.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. However, all three games are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but Atlus's Switch adaptation is surprisingly playable. Each game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit challenging, adventure.
