Saros Is Housemarque’s Successor to Returnal, Arriving in 2026

Housemarque's next title, Saros, a successor to the acclaimed 2022 roguelite shooter Returnal, is set for a 2026 release on PlayStation 5, with enhanced features for the PS5 Pro. The announcement, made during today's PlayStation State of Play, showcases a game distinctly bearing Housemarque's signature style.

Starring Rahul Kohli, players take on the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer investigating a perilous, ever-changing planet shrouded in an eclipse and menaced by a formidable entity. The game's atmosphere echoes Returnal, with the recurring phrase "come back stronger" hinting at its roguelike elements, and the fiery spectacle hinting at Housemarque's signature bullet-hell mechanics.

PlayCreative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's action-focused design philosophy. While a new single-player IP, it builds upon Returnal's engaging third-person combat.

However, significant gameplay differences distinguish Saros from its predecessor. According to Louden on the PlayStation Blog, a key divergence lies in the implementation of permanent resources and progression. While the game world dynamically shifts upon player death, players will retain and permanently upgrade their weaponry and protective suits.

Further details, including an extended gameplay preview, are anticipated later this year. For a comprehensive overview of today's PlayStation State of Play announcements, refer to our complete recap.
