Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Authore: IsabellaUpdate:Jan 22,2025

In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively easy, protecting it from the relentless undead hordes requires a different strategy. This guide details how to create essential barricades, starting with the simple yet effective method of boarding up windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To secure your windows, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these supplies, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for increased protection.

Hammers and nails are typically found in real-life locations such as toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are commonly located at construction sites, or can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.). Admin players can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry compared to unguarded windows. More planks mean increased resistance. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." You'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do so.

Note that large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) cannot be used as effective window barriers; both players and zombies will pass right through them. However, knowing how to move furniture remains a valuable skill for interior design purposes.

More robust barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
