Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto hints at a potential return for beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that their appearance in a future game is "always a possibility," fueled by the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This collection, featuring six classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, offers a chance to reintroduce Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon to a wider audience. These characters, originally featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, have been largely absent from recent installments, save for minor cameos.
Matsumoto suggested that strong fan interest could lead to their inclusion in future titles outside the Versus series, perhaps even Street Fighter 6. He emphasized that re-releasing these classic games not only boosts familiarity with the characters but also expands Capcom's creative pool.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been in the works for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms, emphasizing that fan interest is key to making these projects a reality. Challenges include scheduling and collaboration with external parties, but Capcom aims to revitalize the community by reintroducing these classic titles.
The producer highlighted the importance of re-releasing classic titles to increase awareness among fans and energize the community. He confirmed that Capcom is actively exploring options for bringing more legacy fighting games to modern platforms, acknowledging the mutual desire between developers and fans for these releases.
