Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, but Release Still Distant

Deltarune Chapter 4 Progress

Undertale creator Toby Fox recently offered fans a progress update on Deltarune's upcoming chapters via his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 on PC, Switch, and PS4 remains some time away, despite the announcement in his Halloween 2023 newsletter.

Chapter 4's maps and battles are finished, but require polishing. Fox highlighted needing minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing and visual enhancements, background additions, and refined ending sequences for several battles. He considers it largely playable, receiving positive feedback from playtesters.

The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially given this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasized the need for meticulous attention to detail to ensure a polished product. Before release, the team must complete several key tasks: testing new features, finalizing PC and console versions, Japanese localization, and extensive bug testing.

Chapter 3 development is finished (as per February's newsletter), and preliminary work on Chapter 5 has begun, including map creation and bullet pattern design. While no release date was given, the newsletter teased dialogue between Ralsei and Rouxls, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. Fox confirmed Chapters 3 and 4 will be longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined.

Although the wait continues, Fox expressed confidence that future chapter releases will be more streamlined once Chapters 3 and 4 launch.
