PlatinumGames Celebrates Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary with Year-Long Fan Event
PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. Released on October 29, 2009, in Japan and January 2010 internationally, the original Bayonetta, directed by Hideki Kamiya, introduced players to the Umbra Witch and her signature blend of gunplay, martial arts, and magic-infused hair.
The game's innovative premise and fast-paced action, reminiscent of Devil May Cry, garnered critical acclaim, establishing Bayonetta as a prominent figure in video game history. While Sega published the original title, subsequent sequels became Nintendo exclusives, released on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, further expanded the lore, and Bayonetta herself became a playable character in Super Smash Bros.
Throughout 2025, PlatinumGames will unveil special announcements and Bayonetta-themed products to mark the anniversary. While specifics remain scarce, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.
Limited Edition Merchandise and Ongoing Celebrations
Wayo Records has already launched a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, featuring the Super Mirror design and a melody by Masami Ueda. PlatinumGames is also releasing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos.
Even after 15 years, Bayonetta continues to be praised for its influence on the action genre, particularly its introduction of Witch Time and its impact on subsequent PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly await the upcoming anniversary reveals.
